OV: Why Atomic Element?
Atomic Element: Atomic element was something i picked up from science class in high school. I remember liking the word elements in the periodic table and atomic from astronomy class. I also use to tag using the name atomic so to add the flare of a graphic designer i added the element to sound more cleaner.
OV: Why and how graphic design became an essential part of your life as your passion and profession?
Atomic Element: I started off drawing, drawing was something i wanted to pursue and follow up into animation but then the boom of computers kicked in. I started looking into that, i also started noticing movie posters , business cards, and cd covers and was curious to know who create them.
OV: If you could define your graphic style in just one sentence, what would you say?
Atomic Element: An organic urban style of design.
OV: So, before we started this interview, you told us that despite you have lived many years in Los Angeles (USA), you were born in Guatemala right? Do you feel that somehow your roots are visually manifested in your work?
Atomic Element: Yes i came here when i was just one. so practically was almost born here. But yes you can say some roots are part of my inspiration when doing design, specially in my artwork. Although i don’t remember much of Guatemala, i follow it through the stories and photos and family i still have there.
OV: Here at Oleo Verde we promote and appreciate the good music. Who do you listen to?
Atomic Element: Well i listen to all kinds of music. but the music that gets me inspired is like lupe fiasco, linkin park, dj shadow, portishead, kid cudi and i also listen to a lot of score music, the stuff you here in trailer music.
OV: How’s the work process of Atomic Element in all his projects?
Atomic Element: It might sound wierd but sometimes i follow what every other artist does and do the ‘ writeup random ideas, sketch, finalize sketch, scan, digitize on computer, finalize piece’ but sometimes i just jump on the computer and start freestyling or go out on my balcony and start out with a drawing and get paint and spray cans and just go at it. ssometimes i get a great outcome and sometimes it just doesnt work out.
OV: You know, we also promote environmental awareness and it’s no secret that our planet has been undergoing drastic changes. In wich way do you think, that your talent can bring awareness to the people about this issue?
Atomic Element: Massive image campaigns, designing posters, regarding the bad things we are doing to our planet and showing them the truth.
OV: And the last but not least, what could you say to the future designers of Guatemala?
Atomic Element: Guatemala might be a small country on a map but dont let that intimidate you. Keep doing your thing & keep true to yourself.
